Inequity in health has been pointed out  as a major global problem. Equity in health can be achieved by addressing and influencing the social determinants of health. EU could and should take the world lead in this field.

A major reduction of health differences between European countries as well as within countries could be achieved by programmes to improve health, in particular of disadvantaged groups and countries in Europe. National and European policies and programmes should therefore address the social determinants of health and use the experience of Europe to do this successfully.

The seminar resulted in a consensus agreement to continue the process of establishing a joint programming initiative in the area of "Inequality in health". It was decided at the seminar that at this stage of the process, FAS will be responsible for coordinating the initiative.

It is important to note that at the GPC Open Workshop in Brussels, September 14th, the UK also suggested "Public Health: Inequality in Health" as a possible theme for a joint programming initiative.
